Before you begin any training, you must first establish yourself as the “ALPHA dog” of your family. Your Beagle Pups must know that you’re the leader of the pack and it is YOU who is in charge.

To make sure that your Beagle Puppies recognizes their name, take a treat in your hand and hold it away from your body. Call your Beagle’s name. He is most likely to look at the treat in your hand. Continue calling his name until he turns and looks at your eyes. Give him the treat immediately. Repeat this exercise by holding the treat in the other hand. Once you’re sure that your Beagle has learned to recognize his name, just call his name and reward him for looking at you by petting or with a hug.

How Your Beagle Learns…

Your Beagle Puppies learning period can be divided into five phases:

The Teaching Phase – This is the phase where you must physically demonstrate to your Beagle exactly what you want him to do.

The Practicing Phase – Practice makes Perfect. Once a lesson is learned, practice with your Beagle Pup what you have just taught him.

The Generalizing Phase – Here you must continue practicing with your Beagle in different locations and in an environment with a few distractions. You can take your Beagle out for a walk, or to a nearby park and command him to practice whatever you’ve taught him.

Practicing the learned lessons in multiple locations and in the presence of small distractions will help him learn and retain lessons better .

The Testing Phase – Once you’re sure that your Beagle has achieved almost 90% success….he responds correctly almost every time you give a command, you must start testing his accuracy in newer locations with a lot of distractions.

Example: Take him to the local shopping mall and ask him to obey your command. He may not come up with the correct response the very first time you do this, but you must not lose hope.

The idea is to test your Beagle to see how he responds in an environment which is new to him. Set-up a situation where you are in control of the environment and your Beagle.

There are only 2 possibilities:

Keep on testing until he succeeds. Follow the rule of the 3 Ps – patience, persistence, praise.

Internalizing Phase – Finally, comes the extremely rewarding phase where your Beagle does everything he is taught to do even without your commands.

One of the first things that you need to be aware of are what types of house plants you have. Many house plants can be deadly to your puppies so you really need to know what types of plants are toxic to dogs. Let’s face the facts, puppies like to play, and if they see something moving, they are going to go after it. Many times plant leaves will move and they will immediately become a target for your beagle puppies. Moving targets are very inviting to puppies so make sure you don’t leave any plants near an open window where the wind might blow the leaves around. If you do have plants near windows for sunlight, it’s a good idea to keep them up high enough where your puppies won’t be able to reach them.

If you leave things lying around the floor your puppies will most likely stop to investigate. A pair of socks or shoes can be rather inviting, so be sure to keep your valuable items off the floor. Breakable items should also be kept up high because puppies also like to run and jump around and they may accidentally knock something over in the midst of play.  Removing all of these types of items will eliminate the possibility of frustration and destruction of these articles. However, if your beagle puppies should happen to get into something that they shouldn’t have, you need to be prepared to make the appropriate corrections when your beagle pups decide to investigate.

It’s important to start training your beagle puppies from the very beginning. Simply using a stern voice to correct your beagle pups is a great place to start. There is no need to scream, just sternly correct them and they will quickly understand. You can also use technical like stomping  your foot or clapping your hands to stop them from engaging in unwanted behaviors.
